Up for sale, a 1975 Rickenbacker 4001 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Featuring the original Mapleglo gloss finish, a flawless professional refret, and an upgraded genuine Toaster Top neck position single coil, the bass is well-suited to a broad range of traditional Ric tonalities.
With neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker is extremely resonant and powerful-sounding, thumping and growling in equal measure and offering exquisite sustain. Currently strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, the bass delivers plenty of midrange power and fundamental warmth via the upgraded neck position Toaster and original Hi-Gain bridge pickup. The bass is well-balanced on a strap at 9lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and solid intonation.
The neck has a round C profile that feels effortlessly navigable, measuring
.915” at the 2nd fret just beyond the volute, and also .915” at the 12th. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished slab rosewood fretboard features pearl triangle inlays and a professional refret with fretwire that matches vintage width with a bit more height and crown. These frets offer easy playability in every register, showing virtually no wear, and the neck is straight with responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods. The nut measures a full 1 5/8" in width. The original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover is present, and the clover button tuners turn smoothly. This bass was also produced in a fairly brief era where Rickenbacker used maple headstock wings instead of contrasting walnut, and these wings also sport light figuring in the maple.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the original harness and CTS pots that date to '75. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jackplate has a cleanly stamped serial number with an "OH" prefix that dates to August of 1975. All of the original chrome-plated hardware is intact and extremely clean, including the bridge with five anchor screws and even the original adjustable mute complete with crusty foam (new foam can be installed at buyer's request). Plastics include a replacement one-ply white pickguard and original complement of knobs.
The Mapleglo gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, with cosmetic wear limited to light buckle rash central to the back and a few minor marks on the back lower bout body edge. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth with just a few shallow marks along the profile length.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included.
