Up for sale, a 1975 Alamo Challenger model 2562 vintage 1x10 tube amp in excellent condition and perfect working order, complete with a full vintage tube complement. Hand-built in San Antonio, Texas, the Alamo Electronics Corporation was initially started in 1947 as a radio manufacturer before moving into amplifiers and instruments. The Challenger line, introduced in the late ‘60s, was sometimes described as the “Champ Killer” or “Champ Clone” thanks to the various similarities between this Texas export and the prized Tweed-era Fender 5F1 model.Pushing five all-tube watts via a Class A circuit and single 6V6 power tube, the classic “Tweed tone” manifests itself in a relatively balanced sound with a strong midrange and delightfully early breakup that remains clear and articulate even as the natural overdrive starts kicking in. A highly responsive and dynamic unit, the Challenger can be rough and ripping when dimed out or gentle and sweet in lower volume settings. Rolling off the Tone fattens up the sound dramatically, and turning it all the way up delivers a searing, aggressive bite to the high end.The transformers are original, and the simple hand-wired circuit is untouched, with original CTS pots that date to the 9th week of 1975. The tube complement includes a Sylvania 12AX7 preamp tube, an RCA 5Y3GT rectifier, and a Tung-Sol 6V6 power tube. The speaker is a modern Jensen C10Q 10" ceramic magnet driver, offering quite a bit of punch and low end (especially compared to a Champ). The serialized tube chart is also present inside the cabinet. The amp retains its original smooth black tolex which shows minimal wear, and the black salt-and-pepper grillcloth is in excellent condition, complete with raised Alamo badge, exhibiting a small area of fraying on the top edge just beneath the On/Off switch.
