1974 Martin D-28 Vintage Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, Collector-Grade w/ Case

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1974 Martin D-28 dreadnought acoustic guitar in collector-grade condition. This vintage Martin benefits from a neck reset and upgraded carved bone saddle. Featuring solid East Indian rosewood back and sides and a solid Sitka spruce top that has been worked-in to perfection, this D-28 has a classic Martin dreadnought tonal profile. The guitar delivers a bold, authoritative sound, with plenty of boom and kick in the bass register. There's a warmth and power afforded this particular Martin, with a richness as notes sustain not afforded all D-28s. The wound strings stay clear and defined with a high volume ceiling, while the midrange is very balanced, and the trebles are clear and punchy. The guitar weighs 5lbs 1oz, freshly restrung with 12-54 bronze strings and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action.

The mahogany neck splits the difference between a very soft V and a proper U shape, with plenty of substance and a particularly hearty feel in the higher registers, measuring .880" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 9th. The bound ebony fretboard retains the original slender fretwire which shows just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, and the neck is straight. With 14 frets clear of the body, this D-28 has Martin's traditional 25.4" scale length, and the modern nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock face, the original gold Martin logo is present on the rosewood veneer, and the original Grover Rotomatic chrome tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly.

On the body, the ebony bridge is fitted with a tall, carved un-bleached bone saddle, ensuring optimal articulation and sustain. The original bridge plate is intact, and all braces are properly secured. The pickguard has been replaced, and there are a few additional finish scuffs and minor marks on the lower bout on top and across the strum path. The requisite small "B string crack" between the pickguard edge and bridge has been professionally addressed, and beyond that the guitar is crack-free. Cosmetic wear is otherwise extremely limited, with a few light finish scratches on the back concentrated at the bass-side waist. There is also a doweled and touched-up strap button hole central to the heel.

A vintage molded black Martin hardshell case is included.
