Up for sale, a 1974 Greco PB-420N in excellent condition and in perfect working order, upgraded with a genuine Fender American Vintage Precision Bass pickup. Made at the Matsumoku factory in Japan, this vintage P-Bass is a unique beast, with a notably slender and easy to navigate 1 9/16" nut width which provides a feel akin to your favorite Jazz Bass. There's plenty to love about this bass, which colloquially falls under the "lawsuit" umbrella, although no action was ever taken against Greco for their exacting iterations of USA products. Featuring a lightweight agathis body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard, this bass has a resonant natural midrange that translates well through the pickup, offering the bold traditional thump one expects from the P Bass platform. Weighing 9lbs, this PB-420N has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a big meaty U-shaped profile carve with lots of shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .915" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard is a dark cut with dot inlay and pristine stock medium jumbo fretwire. The scale length is a full 34“, and the nut measures 1 9/16" in width, making for an effortless playing experience. The headstock features an Electric Bass logo in block letters akin to a '70s Fender, and the stock tuners feature vintage-correct full-size baseplates, turning smoothly and holding pitch well. There is a professional seam repair just above the E string tuner post.
The simple electronics work as intended, with Master Volume and Tone knobs governing the upgraded split coil Fender USA P Bass pickup. The stock full-size Japanese pots date to 1973, and the original flat top knurled knobs show uniform surface patina. The deep red tortoise pickguard is in great shape, complementing the lightly ambered Natural finish. Cosmetic wear includes various nicks and marks scattered on the body as a whole consistent with light, honest use, while the neck profile sports an exceptionally clean gloss finish.
