Up for sale, a circa 1974 Greco EG-480B Custom in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced at the Fujigen factory in Japan, this Greco EG-480B is an early pre-serial model featuring a weight-relieved “sandwich” white sycamore body, and a maple neck capped with a bound ebony fretboard. The original Maxon-made neck pickup with its Greco-embossed cover is beefy and round-sounding, while the era-correct double cream bobbin bridge pickup is aligned with a PAF, offering a more open, cutting sound with smooth growl and treble sparkle. Weighing 8lbs 11oz, this Greco has been professionally setup here at Mike & MIke’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a substantial 50s-style C-shaped profile carve, measuring .890” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard features pearloid block inlay and original medium jumbo frets which are in great shape with well-rounded crowns, showing just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock sports the iconic “open book” shape, framed by multi-ply binding with split diamond inlay and a replacement bell-shaped truss rod cover. The original set of chrome-plated star tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics function as intended, with a three-way pickup selector toggle and individual Volume and Tone knobs for each humbucker. The stock harness has full-sized pots and green chicklet tone caps. Plastics include a quartet of reflector top knobs, and hardware includes the Tune-o-matic-style bridge with nylon saddles, along with the original stopbar which shows wear through the chrome plating. The gloss Ebony finish is framed by multi-ply cream binding, and cosmetic wear includes various dings largely relegated to the body perimeter, a small finish chip on the back of the cutaway, and a few faint finish scratches on the body as a whole. The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
A gigbag is included.
