Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson SG Standard in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. This Norlin-era SG pairs an uncommon slab ebony fretboard with the SG's otherwise traditional mahogany construction, yielding a more glassy top end and greater note attack and articulation.
This SG Standard has plenty of natural warmth and midrange growl on tap, and the original pair of "Tarback" humbuckers have a different magnet structure and fewer winds than the T Tops produced in the same era. Coupled with the black epoxy that gave these humbuckers their name and ensures great feedback rejection by suppressing microphonics, the Tarbacks are a lively, sparkling pickup pair. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising bark and clarity, but with a smooth top end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of bold sweetness and percussive cut. This SG Standard weighs 6lbs 9oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish has faded to a Walnut presentation on top, retaining a modicum of the original Cherry on the back and to a greater degree beneath the pickup rings and pickguard. There’s an area of moderate buckle rash central to the back along with some minor cable rash on the back at the lower bout, as well as various minor marks consistent with careful use. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean, with a few shallow marks along the profile length.
A modern hardshell case is included.
