Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson SG Standard in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, finished in Cherry and cmplete with a hardshell case. A great example of a mid-1970s SG, this guitar pairs an uncommon slab ebony fretboard with the SG's otherwise traditional mahogany construction, yielding more glassy top end and greater note attack and articulation. The guitar is loaded with the original pair of "Tarback" humbuckers, which have a different magnet structure and fewer winds than the T Tops produced in the same era. The Tarbacks are a lively, sparkling pickup pair, perfect for pairing with the SG's solid mahogany construction, coupled with the black epoxy that gave these humbuckers their name and ensures great feedback rejection by suppressing microphonics (particularly effective in high gain scenarios). The bridge pickup has excellent cut and growl with a smooth high treble response, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of warmth and thick, punchy low end. Featherweight at 6lbs 8oz, this SG has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut, quickly gaining additional shoulder and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret, .915” at the 7th, and .980” at the 12th. The thick slab ebony fretboard features small block inlay, and the stock medium jumbo fretwire sports Gibson’s wide/flat fret dress of the era, benefitting from a light level and crown during this guitar’s lifetime and only exhibiting a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-3. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 9/16” in width. On the headstock, the original set of Grover Rotomatic tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with a consistent dusting of surface patina and metal keystone buttons. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and CTS pots that date to the 7th week of ‘74. The pickup routes are untouched, and there is a ghosting of larger pickup surrounds in the lacquer clear coat (no additional holes or signs of non-factory mounting) around the stock pickup rings. The original “harmonica” bridge is intact; this SG's neck set is ideal, with good height on both bridge inserts. The chrome plating on the hardware is notably clean, and the original plastics include the small batwing pickguard, quartet of lightly yellowed speed knobs, pickup selector ring, switch surround, and “goof rings” on the tailpiece studs. The original Cherry nitro lacquer finish has aged to a ruddy shade of Walnut, with a “tan line” beneath the pickguard preserving the unaged Cherry color. Cosmetic wear on the finish is limited to a handful of minor nicks and small dings on the body as a whole, as well as light buckle worming across the back. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss finish. A modern Gibson USA hardshell case with white plush interior is included.
