1974 Gibson Les Paul Special 55 Vintage Electric Guitar Ebony w/ P-90s, Case

Up for sale, a circa 1974 Gibson Les Paul Special 55 model in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Professionally refinished in a gloss Ebony nitro lacquer years ago, this finish is essentially indistinguishable from Gibson factory quality, offering a color not otherwise available from Gibson in the model's original run.

The first "reissue" of the '50s Les Paul Special platform and a vintage guitar in its own right, the 55 model features a solid mahogany construction and pair of clear bobbin P-90 pickups. Warm, rich and dynamic acoustically, the pair of original P-90s offer plenty of glassy cut and wooly overdriven bark. The guitar weighs 7lbs 10oz, well-balanced on a strap and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and a gentle increase in additional heft in the upper registers, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard retains the original wide/flat medium jumbo fretwire which shows minimal wear, playing cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock has been fitted with a set of brand new Kluson-style white button tuning machines that match the footprint of the originals. The headstock face has subtle halos of a different set of tuner bushings installed at one point in the guitar's lifetime. And given the full refinish, no serial number or "Made in USA" stamp is present.

All of the electronics function as intended with the clear bobbin P-90 pair wired to a replacement harness with Sprague Orange Drop tone caps. The control cavity also retains the original lacquer finish. The hardware includes a wraparound MojoAxe lightweight aluminum tailpiece, offering the same treble zing and resonance as a '50s Special, with subtle compensation for ideal intonation with a plain G string. All of the original plastic parts are intact including the pickup covers (complete with "goof rings"), multi-ply pickguard, and the quartet of black speed knobs.

The gloss Ebony nitro lacquer finish was professionally executed at an unknown time in the instrument's past, and exceedingly well done. There is some isolated finish checking adjacent to the switch surround on top, one minor finish chip on the bass-side lower bout body edge on top, and just a few additional faint finish scratches on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.

The original black tolex hardshell case with purple plush interior and Gibson silkscreen on the lid is included.
