Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary model in excellent condition, complete with a hardshell case. 100% original aside from a carved bone nut, this Custom features an uncommon Cherry nitro lacquer gloss finish.
The guitar weighs 10lbs, and tonewoods comprise a carved three-piece maple top and "sandwich" mahogany body, paired with a three-piece mahogany neck and bound ebony fingerboard. The warmth and fullness of the mahogany is balanced by the articulate top end and snappy attack provided by both the maple top and the ebony fretboard, and the instrument has ample sustain. All three pickup positions are distinct and rich sounding, and the original pair of T Top humbuckers offer more growl and taut low end from the bridge pickup, while the neck pickup has the expected oomph and fullness. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Les Paul Custom with fresh 10-46 strings, accurate intonation, and low action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped carve at the nut with moderate shoulders and a fast feel, gaining appreciably more heft in the upper registers, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and 1.020" at the 12th. The original slender "banjo" fretwire is intact on the ebony fretboard, which also boasts multi-ply binding and pearl block inlays, with a 20th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. A true “fretless wonder,” the frets show very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-4, with wear extending more faintly beneath the plain strings until fret 7. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone, ensuring optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock retains the original gold Gibson-branded and Schaller-made tuning machines with metal tulip buttons.
The guitar does exhibit a partial headstock fracture extending diagonally from either corner of the nut. This has been professionally addressed, and it's an exceedingly clean repair, smooth to the touch, and structurally sound.
All body routes are original, and the solder joints are untouched on the original electronics, comprising original T Top humbuckers with patent number embossed baseplates and CTS pots which date to 1974. The hardware consists of an original patent number gold ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece (complete with factory black plastic "goof rings" on the inserts). Plastics include the stock truss rod cover, pickguard, switch ring, jack plate, and quartet of black witch hat knobs.
The gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish is well-kept, and the seams on top are very well-matched. Cosmetic wear is limited to light buckle wear central to the back, and some additional minor nicks and light finish scratches on the body as a whole. The neck retains its smooth nitro gloss on the profile length, with one small scuff on the treble side of the carve behind fret 8.
A modern Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case is included.
