Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary model in excellent condition, complete with the original hardshell case. 100% original aside from a set of properly spec'd witch hat knobs and a carved bone nut, this Black Beauty is sleek and elegant. A prime specimen of a '70s Gibson Les Paul, this Custom retains the original T Top humbuckers and delivers plenty of punch and power. The guitar weighs 9lbs 14oz with the traditional tonewood combination of a carved maple top and solid mahogany body, delivering a classic Les Paul tonal profile, with the warmth and fullness of the mahogany balanced by the articulate top end and snappy attack provided by both the maple top and the ebony fretboard. All three pickup positions are distinct and rich sounding, with more snap and taut low end from the bridge pickup, while the neck pickup has the expected oomph and fullness. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Les Paul Custom with fresh 10-46 strings, spot-on intonation, and low action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C carve at the nut, with more roundness and heft as you travel up the fretboard, and nicely rounded shoulders in every register, measuring .840" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The original slender "banjo" fretwire is intact on the ebony fretboard, which also boasts multi-ply binding and pearl block inlays, with a 20th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. A true “fretless wonder,” the frets show just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3 and play cleanly in every register. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone, ensuring optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock retains the original gold Gibson-branded and Schaller-made tuning machines with metal tulip buttons.
All body routes are original, and the solder joints are untouched on the original electronics comprising original T Top humbuckers with patent number embossed baseplates and CTS pots which date to the 37th week of 1974. The hardware consists of an original patent number gold ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece which show uniform surface patina. Plastics include the stock truss rod cover, pickguard, switch ring, and jack plate, with a modern set of properly spec'd black witch hat knobs with gold inserts.
The gloss Ebony nitro lacquer finish is very well-kept, exhibiting light, honest playwear with light finish scratches on top, particularly concentrated beneath the ABR-1 bridge, along with some dings near the lower bout edge on the back and a few additional scattered scuffs and marks. The nitro gloss on the profile is clean and smooth with no palm wear, exhibiting just a few very faint marks on the profile length.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included. The case has a clean exterior, functional latches, original handle, and purple plush interior.
