Up for sale, a 1974 Fender Stratocaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Featuring an ash body and one-piece maple neck, this Strat is extremely lightweight for a Stratocaster from any era of Fender production at only 7lbs 1oz (yes, really) with a natural acoustic tone that's has the glassy treble cut, midrange complexity and general liveliness of this classic Fender tonewood pairing. Plugged in, the trio of staggered pole gray bobbin single coil pickups excel at delivering a range of traditional Strat tonalities. The bridge pickup offers bite and sparkle, the middle has a certain honk and cut, and the neck single coil delivers a smooth, yet detailed tone that's ideal for solos and lead work. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Strat with fresh 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a U-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and quite a bit of substance, measuring .860" deep at the 1st fret and .925" at the 12th. The maple fretboard has been cleanly refretted with jumbo fretwire that exhibits no wear, and the fretboard was also refinished in a complimentary ambered gloss when the refret was done. This Strat plays cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and on the headstock, the original Stratocaster decal with one patent # is intact. The guitar is fitted with a brand new set of vintage-spec Fender "F" tuning machines, and these tuners perfectly match the footprint of the original gears. There are faint halos around the current tuner bushings, as a different tuner set was installed in the guitar’s lifetime. The ink stamp has largely faded from the neck heel, with a few additional original factory stamps on the heel and in the neck pocket.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the original staggered pole neck and middle position single coils, and an identical vintage bridge pickup sourced to return this guitar to stock. All pickups have clean gray fiber bobbins and ink stamps from '74. The wiring harness boasts all new vintage-spec componentry, with 250K CTS pots and a five-way pickup selector switch. There is a small additional route in the body between the control cavity and middle pickup route, and the neck pickup route has also been slightly deepend in the instrument's lifetime. Hardware comprises the original vibrato bridge and jack cup, both of which have gleaming chrome plating, and plastics comprise the original knobs and pickup covers, along with a replacement three-ply white pickguard (the original pickguard is also included).
The instrument retains its original Natural gloss finish, with light, broad checking across the body and buckle wear concentrated between the neck plate and tremolo cavity cover. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to a few scattered small dings on the body as a whole, and there is a cleanly doweled extra forward strap button mounting hole. The neck profile also sports its original gloss, exhibiting just one finish chip on the bass-side of the carve behind fret 2 that’s been worn quite smooth from additional contact with the palm.
The original hardshell case is included, with functional latches and the original handle. The Fender logo is intact on the lid.
