Up for sale, a 1974 Fender Mustang, honestly played and professionally setup. Lively and featherweight at 7lbs 1oz, this Mustang features the tonewood pairing of an alder body and maple neck capped with a rosewood fingerboard, delivering plenty of snap, snarl, and cut. Whether you want chiming traditional single coil bite or the model's classic out-of-phase sound, this Mustang is an articulate and clear sounding Fender that's simply a ton of fun to play. This Mustang has been professionally setup here at Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-50 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a modestly chunky C-shaped profile carve with ample shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .855” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has pearl dot inlays, refretted with flawless slender vintage-spec fretwire. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 7 1/4" fretboard radius, and the nut measures 1 9/16” in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone. On the headstock, the original chrome Fender "F" tuners with white plastic buttons are intact and turn very smoothly. The original date stamp is intact on the neck heel from 1973, with the correct "paint stick" markings and factory stamps in the pocket and on the heel.
The guitar retains its original pair of gray bobbin single coil pickups, and the original CTS pots date to the 5th week of 1974 with untouched solder joints. All routes are untouched and the original brass shielding plates are intact. The original chrome bridge base, vibrato unit, and control plate are all notably clean with plenty of shine and no notable wear. The vibrato actuates easily for expressive warbles and dives, and the vibrato arm is a modern reissue.
The gloss Sunburst finish on the body is 100% original, exhibiting prominent vertical lacquer checking across the body and one black streak in the finish extending from the control cavity, attributable to rust and moisture. Wear on the body is otherwise limited to nicks and dings consistent with honest use, mostly relegated to the parameter. The neck profile gloss has prominent checking and wear down to the bare maple on the profile shoulders, with ambered gloss overspray and various minor marks extending the profile length.
A gigbag included.
