Up for sale, a 1973 Yamaha SA-60 "Super Axe" in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Introduced in 1973, and produced at the Nippon Gakki factory in Japan, the SA-60 was the second highest tiered offering in the early Super Axe lineup, with features and specifications evoking an ES-335. This particular first-year example is 100% original save for a replacement bridge.
The semi-hollow maple body features a full maple centerblock, and acoustically the instrument has a bright, articulate quality balanced by an overarching warmth. The humbuckers are rich and detailed, with tight lows and sweet, singing trebles that result in vocal-like lead passages and well-defined chording. This SA-60 weighs 8lbs 5oz, benefitting from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Slender C, more heft in upper registers, measuring .805” 1st fret, .970” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Rosewood, rounded parallelogram inlays
-Frets: Slender, leveled and crowned, virtually no wear
-Scale Length: 24 3/4”
-Nut: 1.650” (42mm), bone
-Tuners: Yamaha-branded
-Serialization: Five-digit stamp at 22nd fret
Body Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Pickups: 48-2-22 date stamps on baseplates date to 48th year of the Showa period (1973)
-Controls: Volume x2, Tone x2, Three-way pickup selector
-Hardware: Adjustable bridge with threaded saddles (replacement), chrome-plated tailpiece with tooled leather insert
-Plastics: Chrome knobs with ridged grips, three-ply pickguard
Cosmetic wear on the gloss Sunburst finish is limited to light buckle rash central to the back and some minor nicks and scuffs on the body as a whole, largely on the perimeter and lower bout on the back. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with a few shallow marks along the profile length that are not distracting to the palm while fretting.
The original hardshell case is included; the handle is not present, but all three latches are functional.
