Up for sale, a 1973 Gibson SG Standard in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and 100% original save for jumbo refret. A great example of an early '70s SG, this guitar pairs an uncommon slab ebony fretboard with the SG's otherwise traditional mahogany construction, yielding a more glassy top end and greater note attack and articulation. The guitar is loaded with the original pair of "Tarback" humbuckers, which have a different magnet structure and fewer winds than the T Tops produced in the same era. Coupled with the black epoxy that gave these humbuckers their name and ensures great feedback rejection by suppressing microphonics, the Tarbacks are a lively, sparkling pickup pair, perfect for pairing with the SG's solid mahogany construction. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising twang and clarity, but with a smooth top end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of warmth and girthy bass response. Weighing 6lbs 14oz, this guitar is featherweight and very acoustically resonant, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders in every register, offering a consistent increase in overall heft further up the fretboard, measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. The bound slab ebony fretboard features small block inlay, professionally refretted with jumbo fretwire that shows no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and on the headstock, the original Gibson-branded, Schaller-made tuning machines function reliably. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and CTS pots that date to the 35th week of '73. The chrome plating on the hardware is positively gleaming, save for light patina on the bass side of the harmonica bridge. Original plastics include the small batwing pickguard, quartet of speed knobs, pickup rings, switch surround and pair of black plastic "goof rings" framing the tailpiece inserts. The Walnut gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, and cosmetic wear is limited to concentrated buckle rash central to the back, light pick scuffing across the strum path, and a few additional minor marks and finish scratches on the body as a whole. The neck retains its smooth gloss on the profile length with just a couple shallow marks. The original black tolex hardshell case with purple plush interior and Gibson silver silkscreen on the lid is included. The case features its original functional latches and handle.
