Up for sale, a 1973 Gibson SG Special in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. This SG Special is an uncommon and versatile iteration of the model, notable for its pair of mini humbuckers (instead of the P-90s seen on earlier versions). This guitar delivers the warmth, nuance and power of traditional humbuckers, with more jangle and snap in the top end. The solid mahogany body ensures a certain rich and wooly quality, and at only 7lbs 3oz, this SG is very easy on the back. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, dialed in for low action and accurate intonation.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and lightly rolled edges, offering a consistent increase in overall heft further up the fretboard, measuring .845" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard features pearl small block inlay and medium jumbo frets which have good meat and show no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and on the headstock, the original Gibson Deluxe double line tuners with metal tulip buttons are intact, turning smoothly and holding pitch as they should. The headstock was at one time fitted with a different tuner set, as evidenced by the halos of larger washers on the headstock face.
All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and original CTS pots that date to the 35th week of '73. The pickups are identical to the mini humbuckers used on Les Pauls of the era, with clean patent numbers on the baseplates and rare black plastic pickup covers and rings. A quartet of original black speed knobs rounds out the plastics. The stock hardware is all original as well, with an ABR-1 patent number bridge, and stopbar tailpiece with factory black plastic "goof rings" around the tailpiece inserts.
The gloss Walnut nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, and cosmetic wear is limited to light buckle wear just north of the rear control cavity cover, with a few additional minor dings and finish scuffs on the body as a whole. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss on its length, with just a couple tiny marks.
The original black tolex hardshell case with purple plush interior and silver Gibson silkscreen on the lid is included. The original latches are intact, as is the stock handle.
