Up for sale, a 1973 Fender Jazz Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtags. 100% original save for a new carved bont nut, this Jazz Bass' tonewood complement includes an ash body, maple neck, and a bound maple fretboard.
Weighing 9lbs 6oz with plenty of sustain and sonic depth, this instrument has a clear, balanced natural acoustic tone with a glassy treble detail and immediacy attributable to the bound maple fingerboard. The original pair of gray bobbin pickups feature enamel coated wire, Alnico V magnets, and are shellac-potted, offering the distinctive growl, midrange burp and sweetness inherent to the Jazz Bass sound. This Jazz Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with fresh 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a U-shaped profile carve with a substantial, yet effortless feel, measuring .870” deep at the 1st fret and .980” at the 12th. The bound maple fretboard features black block inlay and faintly rolled fretboard edges. The stock medium fretwire has good meat, with moderate, uniform wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-9, particularly beneath the A and D strings. This Jazz Bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the carved bone nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The headstock sports a block logo, and the clover-button tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with Fender-embossed baseplates. A small decal has been added to the back of the headstock, and this can be easily removed at the next owner's discretion. The stamp on the neck heel is still partially intact, with a couple additional factory markings on the neck heel and in the pocket
All of the electronics function as intended, with the original pair of gray bobbin pickups, and the solder joints are untouched, with CTS pots that date to the 29th week of '73. The original chrome-plated hardware is positively gleaming, including the control plate, bridge base, and steel barrel saddles. Plastics comprise the original glossy red "meatball" tortoise pickguard and trio of knobs.
The gloss Sunburst finish is very bold with light horizontal finish checking, and there are two areas of finish loss from “stand rash” adjacent to the rear strap button. Beyond that, cosmetic wear is limited to just a few additional light finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is notably smooth.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included and equally as clean as the bass, with black leather ends, functional latches, the stock handle and raised Fender logo on the lid. Hangtags include the manual, inspection tag, and a Fender leaflet in Japanese, as this bass was sold new within Japan in '73.
