1972 Martin D-18 Vintage Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar w/ Case, K&K Pickup

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1972 Martin D-18 dreadnought acoustic guitar in excellent condition, complete with the original hardshell case and upgraded with a K&K Pure Western transducer pickup. This vintage Martin benefits from recent servicing at Portland Fretworks including a complete refret, new saddle and carved bone nut, replacement pickguard, and bone bridge pins.

Boasting a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides, this Martin has an extremely bold, powerful, woody tone with a present, full bass register that yields a rich bark when you dig in hard with a pick. The trebles are sparkling, round, and punchy, and this D-18 is a very rewarding strummer with good string-to-string note definition and a balanced sound when traveling up the fingerboard. This Martin weighs 4lbs 5oz, professionally setup and dialed in with 12-53 strings and easy-playing action.

The mahogany neck has a profile carve that splits the difference between a C shape and a very soft V, slender at the nut with modest shoulder and gaining notable heft as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .945" at the 9th. The rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted by Portland Fretworks with flawless slender, vintage-spec fretwire, and the guitar plays cleanly up the 25.4" scale with a straight neck. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock features a rosewood veneer on the face, with a clean Martin logo and a set of Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with a very smooth response.

There is a professional V-shaped repair on the treble side of the headstock joint, smooth to the touch with no overspray. The repair is ostensibly stronger than the wood was originally, and the guitar handles full string tension with ease.

The rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, retaining its original bridge plate and fitted with a new saddle. While the saddle is low, and action is well-within proper spec at 7/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret and 5/64” on the treble side, playing easily in every register. The new black pickguard sits flush with the top, and the guitar has the requisite small "B string crack" between the pickguard edge and bridge. A K&K Pure Western soundboard transducer pickup has been installed with a 1/4" endpin jack, and this tried and true favorite does an excellent job of translating the instrument's natural acoustic properties through an amp or mixing board. A strap button has also been added to the treble side of the neck heel.

The finish is 100% original, framed by black Boltaron binding on the top and back. There is broad lacquer checking across the top, buckle rash central to the back, and various dings and minor scuffs on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back and lower bout on top.

The original Martin molded gray hardshell case is included.
