Up for sale, a 1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom in perfect working order with rare embossed pickup covers, complete with the original hardshell case. The guitar features a saturated original nitro lacquer Cherry Sunburst finish on the unusually figured four-piece carved maple top. A great example of an early '70s Gibson Les Paul, this Custom has plenty of tonal heft and natural sustain, weighing 9lbs 15oz.
The combination of a carved maple top and solid mahogany body delivers a classic Les Paul tonal profile, with the warmth and fullness of the mahogany balanced by the articulate top end and snappy note attack provided by both the maple top and ebony fretboard. All three pickup positions are distinct and rich-sounding, with more growl and cut from the bridge pickup, while the neck pickup has plenty of sweetness and breadth. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Les Paul Custom with fresh 10-46 strings, accurate intonation and low action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with notable shoulder and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. The multi-ply bound ebony fingerboard features pearl block inlay, refretted with flawless medium jumbo fretwire. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock retains the original Kluson "waffle back" gold tuning machines with metal tulip buttons. On the back of the headstock, the guitar sports its stamped serial number and "Made in USA" stamp.
The electronics are original, with patent stickers on the T Top baseplates and original Gibson-embossed pickup covers which are a rare variant, only seen from 1971-72. The harness is complete with the original Sprague Black Beauty tone caps and CTS pots which date to 1971. All of the original hardware is intact including the patent number ABR-1 bridge and stopbar, and plastics include the original pickguard and pickup rings, with a modern quartet of aged witch hat knobs and switch surround.
The original Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer is bold and glossy, highlighting unique figuring on the four-piece top, with alternating cuts of figured and more plain maple. The bass-side quarter has lively flame figuring, and the cut to the treble side of the center seam has a speckling of birdseye. Cosmetic wear includes finish loss at bass-side waist on the back and also in a couple isolated areas along the back lower bout body edge, with buckle rash across the back, and some concentrated small marks on the bass-side lower bout on top (likely from wrist jewelry). There are a couple deeper dings of note (one into the back binding) on the bass-side of the body, with some additional smaller marks on the body perimeter. The smooth gloss is retained on the neck profile, with light palm wear through the gloss on the profile shoulders behind frets 1-6, and just a few shallow marks on the profile length.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, with a few functional latches, stock handle, and Gibson silkscreen on the lid.
