Up for sale, a 1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom, soulfully played and extremely original, complete with a vintage hardshell case. A great example of a very early '70s Gibson Les Paul, this Custom retains the original T Top patent sticker humbuckers and delivers plenty of punch and power. Offering rich sustain at 10lbs on the dot, the combination of a carved maple top and solid mahogany body delivers a classic Les Paul tonal profile, with the warmth and fullness of the mahogany balanced by the articulate top end and snappy attack provided by both the maple cap and the ebony fretboard. All three pickup positions are distinct and rich-sounding, with an articulate growl and cut from the bridge position that has ideal treble detail, while the neck pickup has the expected oomph and fullness. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Les Paul Custom with fresh 10-46 strings, spot-on intonation, and low action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with appreciable heft and plenty of shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, filling out to a round but not overtly chunky handful by the 9th fret and beyond, measuring .785" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard retains the original very slender "banjo" fretwire, and this guitar is a true fretless wonder. These frets are on the deck, yet play cleanly in every register, showing just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4 (guitar can be refretted in-house here at the Guitar Bar at buyer’s discretion for an additional cost if desired). The guitar plays easily in every register up the 24 3/4" scale, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock sports the original gold Kluson "waffle back" tuners with metal tulip buttons.
The electronics include the original pair of T Top humbuckers with partial patent stickers retained on both baseplates and original gold covers. The wiring harness has been substituted for modern, tightly-spec'd components with USA-made 500k CTS pots and Bumblebee tone caps. Hardware includes the original patent number ABR-1 bridge and lightweight aluminum stopbar, and there is patina through much of the gold plating. All of the plastic parts are original including the quartet of witch hat knobs with clean gold inserts on the caps as well as the stock pickguard, pickup rings, and switch surround.
The Ebony gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and there is some isolated lacquer checking on the treble side lower bout on top. The guitar exhibits notable buckle rash at the bass-side waist, with additional finish scratches, scuffs, and nicks on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro gloss, free of palm wear with some microscopic marks along the treble side shoulder, imperceptible to the palm while fretting.
An era-correct black tolex hardshell case is included. The case retains the Gibson silver silkscreen on the exterior with a purple plush interior, three original functional latches, and the stock handle. There is one small hole in the case lid.
