Up for sale, a 1971 Fender Competition Mustang in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a vintage hardshell case. 100% original save for a professional refret and carved bone nut, this vintage Fender is finished in Competition Burgundy, essentially Lake Placid Blue with a racing stripe, and the finish shows significant greening. This Mustang has a lively and rich natural acoustic voice that translates well through the stock gray bobbin single coil pickups with great jangle and clarity. Since the pickups are essentially flat pole Stratocaster pickups with covers over the magnets, the tones are surprisingly similar, although the Mustang has the added benefit of a pair of on/off/on pickup switches that offer an out-of-phase sound in their innermost or outermost points for a unique hollow twang and quack. Featherweight at only 6lbs 14oz, this Mustang has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 11-49 strings and low action. The maple neck has a U-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and a substantial feel, measuring .880" deep at the 1st fret and .925" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4" radius, professionally refretted with medium jumbo fretwire that shows no wear and plays cleanly up the 24" scale. The neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The nut has been upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 9/16" in width, ensuring ideal note clarity and sustain. On the headstock, the guitar features the original set of Fender's "F" tuning machines with white hexagonal buttons. The heel of the neck retains its dark green 1971 date stamp, along with the requisite paint stick markings and factory stamps in the pocket. The electronics all function as intended, with original pickups that have four digit date stamps on the gray bobbins, and stock Stackpole pots which date to the 16th week of '71 with untouched solder joints. The original bridge is present, and the large barrel saddles work well with the original vibrato unit. This vibrato has excellent spring tension and actuates with a light touch of the stock arm, jumping back to the original pitch with ease. The chrome plating on the vibrato and control plate is bright and clean, with patina across the barrel bridge saddles. Plastics include the original pair of knobs and the white pearloid pickguard which has a few reglued corners (common due to the shrinkage of the pearloid material over time). The original gloss Competition Burgundy finish has greened considerably, with tight, faint horizontal finish checking on top, and broad, vertical checking on the back. There are some concentrated buckle marks on the back bass-side lower bout, with some scattered dings on the back and body perimeter (and to a much lesser extent on top), with some minor finish loss on the lower bout body edge near the rear strap button. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, exhibiting palm wear through the finish on the treble side profile edge behind frets 1-5.A late '70s Fender black tolex hardshell case is included with the black leather ends and the raised Fender logo on the exterior.
