Up for sale, a 1971 Fender Competition Mustang Bass in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Featuring a Competition Red finish, this particular color is essentially Candy Apple Red with a (uniformly yellowed) Olympic White racing stripe.
The bass has a rich, round acoustic voice with smooth sustain and a touch of growl in the top end. There's a certain pluck and punch unique to this bass that's particularly appealing and sits well in a mix, filling out the low end nicely. Offering more upper midrange focus than a P, this Mustang Bass is strung with fresh roundwound 45-100 strings and has a surprising amount of oomph when picked with authority. The instrument weighs 7lbs 9oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a deep U-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and rolled fretboard edges, measuring .915" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. On the rosewood fretboard, the original slender frets are intact, showing only faint wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-4. The bass plays cleanly up the 30" scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and the headstock retains the original "Mustang Bass" decal as well as a set of stock Fender-branded chrome tuning machines with clover buttons. The neck heel retains its green inked February, 1971 date stamp.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the solder is untouched, with Stackpole pots that date to the 7th week of '71. And as with many Fender basses from this era with white pearloid pickguards, the pickguard is fused with the finish, showing a tiny bit of finish reaction beyond the pickguard edge. The chrome plating on the control plate and bridge is notably bright and clean, and plastics include the original pair of knobs and the white pearloid guard.
The Competition Red gloss is dark and saturated, with one small area of chipped finish on the back lower bout body edge, light buckle wear at the edge of the belly contour, and a couple extremely faint rectangular marks in the clear coat on the back from previously removed stickers. The neck has a smooth gloss, with palm wear through the finish on the treble-side shoulder and a few shallow marks on the profile length.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, with the original functional latches and handle.
