Up for sale, a 1970s Yamaha SA-90 “Super Axe” in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Produced at the Nippon Gakki factory, this Yamaha is a prime example of premium Japanese craftsmanship put to the task of improving upon American design, with sights set on the Gibson ES-355 as a template. Introduced in 1974, the SA-90 was a top shelf model featuring a semi-hollow maple body paired with a maple neck and ebony fretboard. As Yamaha built all components of their instruments in-house, including the electronics and hardware, every aspect of the SA-90 is purposefully tailored and unique to this line of instruments. The tonewood combination offers a full sounding, airy, articulate response that balances well with the semi-hollow design and stock pair of humbuckers. This Super Axe weighs 9lbs and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, comfortable action, and accurate intonation.

The two-piece maple neck has a slender C shaped profile with good shoulder, measuring .810” deep at the 1st fret and .928” at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard features abalone delta inlay and stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets show virtually no wear with their full factory height, and the guitar plays well in all registers up the straight neck with an ideally adjusted and responsive truss rod. The scale length is 24 3/4", and the nut measures 1 5/8" in width. The bound headstock features the Yamaha-branded truss rod cover, tuning fork logo, and gold set of Yamaha tuners that turn smoothly and hold their pitch well.

All of the original electronics work as intended, with a three-way toggle selector and dedicated Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup. The original quartered of knobs are intact, along with the metal switch tip and red tortoise shell multi-ply pickguard. The gold Yamaha tailpiece is quite clean, with well preserved stamped leather stamped. The gold hardware shows light patina in the plating, particularly on the pickup covers. This Super Axe is exceptionally clean for its age, and cosmetic wear is limited to just a few light scuffs on the original gloss finish. The neck profile sports a pristine smooth gloss finish.

A gigbag is included.
