Up for sale, a 1970s Jose Oribe Classic vintage classical guitar in crack-free condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtag. With a career dating back to 1962, Vista, CA-based master luthier Jose Oribe is one of North America's longest-active veteran classical builders. His Madrid-style instruments are praised for their premium tonewoods and materials, with build quality echoing the work of masters like Ramirez and Contreras. Interestingly, Oribe's work is also influenced by the German style of luthiers like Hermann Hauser, and this particular example features the same Landsdorfer tuners used by Hauser on his legendary guitars.
This particular Oribe is a unique, early model with a slightly more compact 640mm scale length, featuring a fan-braced cedar top, rosewood back and rims, and a mahogany neck capped with an ebony fingerboard. The body width measures 14 1/2", with a 4" deep lower bout. The instrument delivers the bold, detailed sound of a seasoned cedar soundboard, with trebles that have a nice bounce and pop. The midrange is sweet and textured, and the low strings have a pillowy warmth, clear cut and yielding a smooth bloom as notes sustain This Oribe Classic has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and fresh normal tension strings.
The mahogany neck is reinforced with ebony, and the neck has a C-shaped carve with less pronounced shoulders than most classicals, measuring .845" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 9th. On the ebony fretboard, the slender frets show no wear, and the guitar plays cleanly up the 640mm scale. Action measures 10/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret, and 8/64" on the treble side. The nut measures 2" in width, and the headstock features a rosewood overlay and Landsdorfer gold-plated tuners.
On the cedar top, the bridge sits flush on all edges, and the carved bone saddle has ample height. String spacing at the bridge measures 2 5/16". Visible through the soundhole, the original label is intact, noting the unique scale length and instrument production number, as well as the Vista, CA location which Oribe relocated to in the early '70s. While a French Polish finish is purported for most Oribe production, this guitar is finished in lacquer, exhibiting discoloration in the gloss on the rims and bass side of the back in particular. There are scattered dings across the top, and cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to faint scuffing in the clear coat on the back and a few additional minor marks consistent with use. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with one shallow mark on the bass-side shoulder behind fret 9.
The original hardshell case and hangtag are included.
