Up for sale, a 1970's Greco by Tama model 3555 vintage dreadnought acoustic guitar, near mint and 100% original, complete with the original hardshell case. A notably rare model produced in Japan (purportedly by Ibanez) the Greco/Tama branding is a bit of an anomaly, with the 3555 model typically branded Tama for export to Western countries, while the Greco branding was presumably for the domestic Japanese market.
Mirroring Martin's D-28 dreadnought yet with slightly more upscale appointments, the 3555 has a spruce top, bookmatched Jacaranda (Bolivian rosewood) back and sides, and a mahogany neck with a massive U-shaped profile carve capped with an ebony fingerboard. This Greco offers a big, bold dreadnought sound with plenty of clarity and treble sweetness. Wound strings have a clear, cutting sound with smooth sustain, and this Greco is a very rewarding strummer with enough detail for fingerpicking. The guitar weighs 4lbs 9oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12-53 strings and comfortable action.
The U-shaped neck profile carve exceeds the dimensions of virtually all but the largest Pre-War Martin necks, offering tons of shoulder in every register and measuring .920" deep at the 1st fret and 1.085" at the 9th. The bound ebony fretboard features dot inlay and practically perfect slender fretwire that plays cleanly up the 25 1/4" scale. The bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock has a clean rosewood veneer and Greco gold silkscreen logo. The sealed chrome tuning machines turn smoothly and function as intended.
The top features a rosewood bridge and drop-in saddle that has good height. The top and back have multi-ply binding, with additional abalone trim framing the rims and soundhole rosette. The serial number is stamped on the brace beneath the fretboard extension, and the "Greco by Tama" text is visible through the soundhole. This Greco is crack-free, and the bookmatched Jacaranda back and sides have particularly dynamic grain patterns. There is light cloudiness of the gloss finish on the sides, and cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to a few faint pick scuffs across the guard, and a few light finish scratches on the back. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included.
