Up for sale, a 1970s Gibson SG II in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Only produced from 1972-76, this short-lived Gibson offering was initially introduced as a more affordable, entry-level SG, with features including a pair of mini humbuckers, a solid alder body, mahogany neck and a slab Indian rosewood fretboard. This particular SG II features a bevy of upgrades and augmentations, including a pair of Lollar pickups, a MojoAxe compensated wraparound tailpiece, and Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
The Lollar pickups include a Firebird-style pickup in the neck position and a more traditional mini humbucker at the bridge. Designed to sound closer to a fat single coil than a full-size humbucker, the Firebird pickup has a brighter overall sound comparative to a mini hum, and the bass response remains tight and defined noticeably longer. The bridge pickup is more akin to the pickups found in a '70s SG Special or Les Paul Deluxe, offering the ideal middle ground between single coil shimmer and humbucker warmth, with great treble cut and wooly bark. This pickup is also wound to be less microphonic than a '70s humbucker, ensuring ideal responsiveness and limited squeal in high gain scenarios. Each position on the three-way pickup selector switch is distinct and clear, and this SG-II is featherweight at only 6lbs 2oz. We've had this vintage Gibson professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with good shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, gaining significant heft further up the fretboard, measuring .810” deep at the 1st fret and 1.005” at the 12th. On the slab rosewood fretboard, the medium jumbo fretwire benefits from a level and crown, currently exhibiting light wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-7. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 9/16“ in width. The headstock retains the original Gibson logo, and the upgraded set of Grover Rotomatic tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch (five of these Grovers have the vintage "bullseye" gear housings, with one replacement).
All of the electronics function as intended, with the Lollar pickups wired to a harness with an amalgamation of vintage potentiometers and two different tone capacitor styles. The MojoAxe lightweight aluminum wraparound tailpiece is brand new, with gleaming nickel plating, and this component is one of the most highly regarded Gibson wraparounds on the market, with subtle compensation across the top for accurate intonation with a plain G string. Plastics comprise the quartet of modern reflector cap knobs, the control plate, and the elevated one-ply black pickguard.
The gloss Cherry Red nitro lacquer finish has aged to a stately Walnut on the face of the instrument, with a slightly ruddier shade retained on the back. Cosmetic wear includes a number of minor dings on the body as a whole, with some limited wear through the gloss along the lower bout body edge and buckle rash extending across the back. The smooth gloss on the neck profile has a worn-in, fast feel, with a handful of shallow nicks along the profile length that don't distract the palm while fretting.
A vintage hardshell case is included, along with an additional bridge, a Leo Quan Badass adjusto-matic wraparound design.
