Up for sale, a 1970s Elk Incorporated Super Fuzz Sustainar in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. Produced by Hoshino Gakki in the early 1970s, these rare pedals were among the first Japanese-produced copies of Electro Harmonix’s triangle Big Muff and are almost never seen outside their country of origin. Highly desirable in their own right amongst fuzz aficionados for their absolutely monstrous tone, the Super Fuzz is warm and rich while delivering loads of bright, biting distortion. The Super Fuzz Sustainar takes its control scheme directly from the triangle Big Muff, with Volume, Sustain, and Tone knobs. The Tone knob is inverted; rolling it off actually brightens the sound and brings in loads of wonderfully dirty, abrasive grit, while turning the knob clockwise fattens the midrange and low-end response and smooths out the overall distortion significantly. The circuit is untouched, with a host of NEC A733 transistors. The trio of machined aluminum knobs are replacements. There’s light patina on the aluminum enclosure, and the black silkscreen graphics are flawless.
