Up for sale, a 1970 Gibson ES-150D in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A wholly different instrument than the ES-150 produced by Gibson in the '50s, the ES-150D is essentially a double cutaway version of the Gibson ES-175, fully hollow and with the full body depth of a traditional archtop.
Loaded with the original pair of T Top patent stickered humbuckers, the ES-150D has a very rich tonal character, capturing the richness of the fully hollow construction and the immediacy and treble detail of maple as a tonewood. The bridge pickup has a sparkling cut and growl, while the neck position is inherently fatter, with a sweetness suited to both lead work and complex chording. This uncommon Gibson model is applicable to a wide range of genres and can handle a surprising amount of tube driven overdrive without feedback as well. The guitar weighs 6lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 roundwound strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve, with a gentle increase in shoulder and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and .955" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard has small block inlay and retains the original medium jumbo fretwire which has Gibson's wide/flat fret dress of the era, showing virtually no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut has the 1 9/16" width seen throughout most of the 1960s and 1970s on Gibson's ES models. On the headstock, the guitar is fitted with a set of genuine vintage Kluson Deluxe double line, double ring gears which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. A different tuner set was at one time installed, as evidenced by the faint halos of larger washers around the push-in bushings on the headstock face. Transitional for 1970, the headstock has the small "Made in USA" text beneath the serial, and just a hint of a volute. The back of the headstock also has a vintage waterslide decal from Matt Umanov Guitars and a small "2" denoting a Factory 2nd for some small cosmetic mark undetectable after 50+ years.
On the body, all of the original electronics function as intended, with clean patent stickers on the baseplates of the T Top humbuckers, and untouched solder on the chrome covers. The control layout included dedicated Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup, with a three-way pickup selector and additional Master Volume knob on the treble-side cutaway. The original ABR-1 bridge has its stock nylon saddles and both the patent number and foundry stamp on the bridge base, and the trapeze tailpiece rounds out the hardware. Plastics are notably clean and include the five original witch hat knobs and multi-ply narrow bevel pickguard.
The Walnut gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and cosmetic wear is limited to some finish scuffing and minor dings on the back, primarily on the lower bout, and just a few additional small marks and finish scratches consistent with careful use on the body as a whole.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, retaining its original latches and handle, with a silver "Gibson" silkscreen on the lid.
