Up for sale, a 1969 Martin 00-18, complete with a modern Martin TKL hardshell case. This guitar will delight serious players looking for an expressive, dynamic vintage Martin, and this guitar features the original nitro lacquer finish and stock bridge plate.
With a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides, this Martin delivers a sound that has ample power and top end articulation. You certainly don’t have to work hard to make the top give up the goods. Clear and warm, this 00 has tons of projection and breadth, which belies the modest body size. There's a full, focused quality to the wound strings, and the midrange frequencies are balanced, providing ideal clarity for the sweet, punchy-sounding plain strings. The EQ curve of the instrument is sympathetic to fingerpicking, and the warmth of the mahogany back and sides keeps everything full and sweet sounding regardless of how hard you strum. The guitar is featherweight at 3lbs 5oz. Professionally setup and freshly restrung with 12-53 strings, this 00-18 is dialed in and ready for stage and studio use.
The mahogany neck has a very soft, slender V profile carve with more depth and substance as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .945" at the 9th. The rosewood fretboard retains the original slender fretwire, showing heavy wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, with fainter wear extending to fret 5. The rosewood itself also shows light wear beneath the strings on frets 1-3, and clearly the previous owner stayed firmly in the “cowboy chord” area. The guitar plays cleanly in every register and the neck is very straight, offering easy playability in every register. The upgraded hand-carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the scale length is 24.9". The headstock face has a rosewood veneer with a clean Martin script and modern replacement relic'd nickel Golden Age Restoration open-gear tuners. These gears turn very smoothly and hold pitch well with white buttons.
On the body, the bound top retains the original Brazilian rosewood bridge, and the original mahogany bridge plate has also been retained. The original saddle is relatively low, and action is well within spec in every register, as this Martin has never necessitated a neck reset. A replacement black pickguard has been installed, and the top has the requisite very short "B string crack" repair between the pickguard edge and bridge. There is prominent pick wear across the strum path, into the treble side soundhole edge and beyond the pickguard on the treble side with a few additional scuffs at the bass-side waist. Two professionally repaired cracks extend behind the bridge on top, with one tiny repaired split just to the bass side of the endpin in the mahogany. The back and sides are otherwise crack-free. The guitar exhibits a spot of light targeted buckle rash central to the waist, with some light wear in the clear coat of the nitro from contact with a strap in the case for an extended period of time, with this wear extending to the mahogany adjacent to the endpin.
A modern Martin TKL black tolex hardshell case is included.
