Up for sale, a 1968 Yamaha SG-2A “Flying Samurai” in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This rare original-run SG-2A (produced from 1967-71) was clearly designed to ride the wave of the ‘60s surf craze, with elements inspired by both Mosrite and Fender including the pair of single coil pickups and the Jazzmaster-esque vibrato.
The asymmetrical body is crafted from alder, and the flame maple neck and bound rosewood fretboard round out the tonewood complement. This guitar has a chiming, resonant acoustic presence, with a harmonically-complex and warm midrange faithfully captured by the stock pair of single coil pickups. These pickups offer bold, sparkling cleans with good meat and roundness, never too thin, yet clear and defined in each pickup position. Weighing 7lbs 8oz, this SG-2A has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a medium depth soft V-shaped profile carve with modest shoulders at the nut, gaining a hair more heft and roundness in the upper registers, measuring .825” deep at the 1st fret and .965” at the 12th. The 22-fret bound rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4“ radius and is stamped with the serial beyond the last fret, dating this instrument to 1968. The stock slender fretwire is in great shape, with well-rounded crowns, only exhibiting light wear on the crowns of frets 1-3. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck, and the nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width, just behind the zero fret. The “hockey stick” headstock retains the Yamaha tuning forks logo, and the stock set of Yamaha-branded tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickups governed by a three-way pickup selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls. The chrome hardware is very clean; the vibrato has a wide range for expressive dives and warbles, very smooth and Jazzmaster-esque, working in concert with the original bridge which boasts individually height adjustable saddles with mini nylon rollers. The original curved vibrato arm is included. Plastics comprise the original knobs and three-ply white pickguard.
The gloss Candy Blue finish is bright and bold, with cosmetic wear including some limited buckle worming on the back and a number of minor nicks and dings on the body as a whole. The ambered gloss on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
A Yamaha-branded faux leather padded gigbag is included.
