Up for sale, a 1968 Martin D12-35 12-string vintage dreadnought in excellent condition, complete with a hardshell case. This D12-35 features an X-braced Stika spruce top with solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides. A particularly dynamic cut of Brazilian was chosen for the central third on the back, and a mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard round out the essential tonewoods.
This 12 string has incredible chime, with the power and articulation attributable to the dreadnought body shape. The sound is rich and layered, with a velvety, chorusing response, delivering sweetness, cut, and Matin’s quintessential piano-like clarity and string-to-string balance. This Martin weighs 4lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with fresh bronze strings and easy-playing action.
The mahogany neck has a substantial soft V-shaped profile carve, measuring .875” deep at the 1st fret and .965” at the 9th. The ebony fretboard has been refretted with flawless medium fretwire, and this guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck. The scale length is a full 25.4”, and a modern carved bone nut measures 1 7/8“ in width. The slotted headstock sports a Brazilian rosewood veneer and a flawless Martin logo, and the original open-gear tuning strip tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should.
On the body, the ebony bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, with minimal deflection behind the bridge. The replacement compensated saddle is quite low, yet offers easy playability in every register, with action currently sitting at 7/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret and 5/64" on the treble side. The pickguard is a modern replacement, and pick wear extends to the treble-side upper bout. A K&K pickup has been installed, complete with 1/4" endpin jack.
The gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, exhibiting pick wear on the treble-side upper bout on top. This Martin has the usual small "B string" crack repair between the bridge and pickguard edge, and the center seam on top has also been repaired. The Brazilian rosewood back and sides are crack-free, and cosmetic wear includes various small dings on top, and just a few additional faint finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. There is also some light texturing in the finish on the treble-side rim at the waist from sitting on a knee or contact with some foreign object. A strap button has been added to the treble side of the neck heel, and the satin finish on the profile carve is notably smooth.
A modern Martin TKL-made black tolex hardshell case is included.
