Up for sale, a 1968 Hagstrom Viking Deluxe V2 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This upscale vintage Hagstrom is the model indelibly associated with Elvis' 1968 Comeback Special TV performance, and as the premium iteration of the Viking platform, this guitar was only produced from 1967-68. Features include gold hardware accenting a Cherry Red finish, semi-hollow figured birch body construction with a birch neck and a bound ebony fretboard, and a pair of Hagstrom’s proprietary single coil pickups.

The semi-hollow construction and tonewood complement yield a naturally resonant acoustic response with an authoritative bark and glassy treble immediacy, faithfully captured by the pair of “Super-Sensitive” pickups. These pickups have a percussive cut, overarching balance and nice midrange bump that yields a distinctive presence and authority in a mix. The neck pickup meters at 6.5k ohms, offering a full, throaty zing and lots of harmonic complexity, and the bridge pickup meters at 7.6k ohms, delivering more snap and sweet growl. Featherweight at just 6lbs 2oz, this Viking Deluxe V-2 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-52 roundwound strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The birch neck has a very slender D-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and a fast feel, measuring .795” deep at the 1st fret and .820” at the 12th. The ebony fingerboard has been rebound with correct multi-ply binding, and the guitar has been professionally refretted as well. The frets are pristine, offering a bit more meat than original Hagstrom fretwire, and there’s limited touch-up along the binding edge on the treble-side shoulder of the profile carve. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the replacement nut measures 1 9/16” in width. The headstock sports a raised Hagstrom script logo, and the original set of gold-plated tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The three-bolt neck plate is embossed with the six-digit serial number, marking this guitar as being part of production run #732 (1967-68).

All of the electronics function as intended, with the pair of pickups governed by a three-way selector switch and independent pairs of Volume and Tone controls. The original quartet of knobs are present, and the pickguard has gold pinstriping, a feature unique to the upper-tiered V2. Hardware includes the floating ebony bridge with brass saddles and the trapeze tailpiece complete with Hagstrom crest.

The top, back, and F-holes are framed by multi-ply binding, and the gloss Cherry Red finish highlights dimensional quilt figuring in the bookmatched birch back and top. The body exhibits light finish checking, and cosmetic wear is limited to minor buckle rash on the back and just a handful of small nicks and faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The neck profile retains its smooth matching gloss, also exhibiting some finish checking, along with just a couple tiny, shallow marks, none of which distracts the palm while fretting.

A modern Gator-brand brown tolex hardshell case with pink plush interior is included.
