1968 Gibson SG Melody Maker Vintage Electric Guitar Pelham Blue 100% Original w/ Case

Up for sale, a 1968 Gibson SG Melody Maker in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Retaining its original Pelham Blue nitro lacquer gloss finish which has aged to a shade approximating Inverness Green, this single pickup iteration of the Melody Maker platform features the distinctive SG body shape introduced in the mid-60s. The robust-sounding single coil bridge pickup combines a Fender-esque snap and twang with the fuller midrange and low end punch that mahogany provides. The Melody Maker has a raw, bell-like sound and tonal profile all its own, and the single coil has plenty of detail and cut. This guitar is very easy on the back too, featherweight at 6lbs 10oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, the SG Melody Maker offers easy playability, freshly restrung with 10-46 roundwound strings.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with full shoulders in every register and significantly more roundness and heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .780" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. On the dark rosewood fretboard, the original medium jumbo frets are intact, showing virtually no wear and playing cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale. The neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock sports the Melody Maker's signature slender "open book" shape, with original Kluson Deluxe double line tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well with original white buttons.

On the body, the electronics function as intended with untouched solder joints on the original wiring harness, CTS pots that date to '68, and ceramic disc tone caps. The original pickguard is intact with a touch of light yellowing, and the black reflector cap knobs round out the plastics. The bridge can double as a wraparound if bypassing the vibrato is desired, yet the bridge has ideal height on both thumbwheels, working in concert with the short frame Lyre Vibrola tailpiece. The Vibrola has a smooth, quick response with gleaming chrome plating on the bridge and tailpiece.

The Pelham Blue gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original, exhibiting considerable greening with broad lacquer checking across the body. There are two short repaired splits only extending from the control cavity edge around the lower bout, with a few finish chips along the lower bout body edge, and a few light finish scratches central to the back. The natural gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth, free of palm wear.

The original black tolex chipboard case is included with functional latches and the original handle. The case no longer has an accessory pocket inside.
