Up for sale, a 1968 Gibson ES-335 TDC in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A stunningly clean and original example, this ES-335 TDC features the traditional tonewood combination of a semi-hollow maple body, one-piece mahogany neck and bound rosewood fingerboard.
Tonally authoritative and clear when strummed acoustically, the articulate natural response of the instrument is channeled through the original patent sticker T Tops humbuckers, with a chiming, dynamic treble snap, midrange-rich growl, and low end that is fat yet clear. The tone has the airy and warm qualities of its semi-hollowbody construction, offering the immediate attack and dynamic responsiveness of maple as a tonewood. The guitar weighs 8lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a profile carve unique to late '60s Gibsons, with a slender C shape at the nut and more shoulder and heft in the higher registers, measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard boasts small block inlays, with original medium jumbo fretwire that has its full factory height and plenty of meat, exhibiting very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-5, extending beneath the plain strings until fret 9. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and is a modern replacement. The headstock retains its original bell truss rod cover, and a previous owner's ID is etched in microscopic lettering on the edge of the truss rod cover. The original set of double line double ring Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are also intact, turning smoothly and functioning as intended.
All of the electronics work as they should, and both humbuckers have untouched solder on the covers and original patent stickers on the baseplates. The neck pickup cavity reveals the long tenon joint, and there is a small area of black finish overspray between the fretboard and neck pickup cavity (likely from some very minor finish lifting/chipping in this area). The original chrome pickup covers, patent number ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge, and trapeze tailpiece have gleaming plating, and all plastic parts are very tidy as well including the pickguard and quartet of witch hat knobs. The orange oval Gibson Kalamazoo, MI label is also intact inside the body and extremely clean.
Cosmetically, this guitar is a real stunner, and the gloss Cherry finish is a rich shade, highlighting bubble maple figuring across the back. Cosmetic wear is limited to some requisite pick scuffing across the pickguard and just a few light finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is nigh-flawless.
The original black tolex hardshell case with gold plush interior is included. The case features original, functional latches, the stock handle, and the small Gibson badge on the exterior.
