Up for sale, a 1968 Fender Mustang in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and polish cloth. This vintage Mustang has a clear, smooth acoustic voice that translates well through the stock gray bobbin pickups with plenty of sparkle and percussive cut. Since the pickups are essentially flat pole Stratocaster pickups with covers over the magnets, the tones are surprisingly similar, although the Mustang has the added benefit of a pair of three-way on/off/on pickup switches for an out-of-phase hollow twang and quack when the switches are engaged in their innermost or outermost positions. The guitar weighs 7lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 10-46 roundwound strings, low action and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders in every register and faintly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 1 5/8" nut width, and 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The dark rosewood fretboard has pearloid dot inlay and original slender frets that are remarkably clean, showing just a touch of uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the straight neck with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. On the headstock, the Mustang decal is intact on the face, and the unusual (yet original) Kluson Deluxe double line tuners work smoothly and hold pitch well with clean white buttons. The neck heel retains a bold November, 1968 date stamp, along with the "paint stick" markings in the neck pocket indicative of an original finish. The electronics all function as intended, and everything is original right down to the last screw. The solder joints are untouched, the original gray bobbin pickup pair is present, and the Stackpole pots date back to the 33rd week of '66. The original hardware is all present including the F-embossed four-bolt neck plate, bridge with barrel saddles, and Patent # vibrato unit, all of which have gleaming chrome plating. This vibrato has excellent tension and actuates with a light touch, jumping back to the original pitch with ease and complete with the stock arm. The original plastic parts are near mint, including the stock knob pair and red tortoise pickguard which is well-preserved with virtually no shrinkage. The Olympic White gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, notably white with sparingly little aging of the clear coat. There is light buckle rash at the bass-side waist, some isolated spots of light vertical finish checking, and some minor marks largely on the back, but also extending where the forearm crosses the top (there is a touch more finish yellowing in this area as well). The gloss finish on the neck profile is extremely clean and smooth, free of palm wear. The original Victoria Luggage-made hardshell case with gray textured exterior is included, along with the original polish cloth. The case has clean black leather ends, a trio of stock latches, the original handle, and even the small neck strap.
