Up for sale, a 1967 Martin D-28 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Featuring a particularly visually dynamic set of bookmatched Brazilian rosewood back and rims, this vintage Martin dreadnought is a real looker, having received all the service befitting an acoustic of this era and caliber. Maintenance includes a professional neck reset, new carved ebony bridge and all bone saddle, reinforced original small maple bridge plate, and a replacement pickguard.
This instrument has a classic Martin dreadnought tonal profile, with rich note detail, a high volume ceiling and the incredible power attributable to the solid Brazilian rosewood back and rims paired with an X-braced Sitka spruce top. Highly responsive to player inputs, the guitar delivers Martin’s quintessential piano-like clarity and string-to-string balance, with an open, relaxed quality achieved by a seasoned spruce soundboard. The bass register is warm and woody with plenty of boom and kick, offering lots of bloom and harmonic complexity in the midrange when notes ring out, while the trebles are sparkling and round. This D-28 weighs 4lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Mahogany
-Shape: Soft V, slender at nut with more heft in upper registers, measuring .785” 1st fret, .960” 9th fret
-Fretboard: Ebony, dot inlay
-Frets: Slender, faint wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-7
-Scale Length: 25.4”
-Nut: 1 11/16”
-Tuners: Grover Rotomatic “Pat. Pend”
Body Specs:
-Wood: Spruce, Brazilian rosewood
-Bracing: X-braced
-Hardware: Replacement carved ebony bridge, compensated bone saddle (originals in case), original maple bridge plate (reinforced)
-Plastics: Replacement pickguard
-Serialization: Stamp on heel block dates production to 1967
A well-kept example, there is a singular repaired split on the back just to the treble side of the backstrip on the upper bout, and the gloss finish exhibits faint wear in the clear coat from contact with the case lining, particularly on the rims. Further cosmetic wear is limited to pick wear beyond the edges of the pickguard, light buckle rash, and a few minor dings and scuffs on the body as a whole. Palm wear on the neck profile behind frets 1-6 has left the neck with an open-grain feel, and the smooth satin finish is intact in the upper registers.
The original molded hardshell case is included.
