Up for sale, a 1966 Rickenbacker 4005 bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A rare vintage Ric bass with sparingly small production totals, the semi-hollow 4005 was only offered from 1965-71, featuring a carved maple body with zipper binding on the back. This particular Jetglo 4005 retains the original plastics, tuning machines, Rick-o-Sound jack plate and wiring harness, outfitted with modern Rickenbacker Toaster pickups and bridge hardware.
The 4005's body is essentially an elongated version of Ric's 300 series guitars, complete with a bound rosewood fingerboard with deluxe inlay. With a full 33 1/2" scale length, the 4005's natural acoustic properties combine the treble detail and note attack of maple with the sonic breadth and sweet sustain of the semi-hollow, set neck construction.
The neck pickup has a broad, pillowy thump and thud, with a vocal midrange quality and overall grind accentuated by the 45-100 roundwound strings. The bridge pickup’s tone cap filters it so there’s a nasally upper midrange, more present and treble-centric while still retaining enough body. The smaller 5th knob balances the attributes of the two pickups nicely, and the overarching sound of the bass is quite distinct, both from other instruments of the era and Ric basses too. Lightweight at 8lbs 3oz, this 4005 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The gloss Jetglo finish exhibits extensive checking, revealing the primer underneath, framed on back by zipper binding. There are a couple small doweled mounting holes on top where a finger rest and alternate pickup were previously installed, and cosmetic wear on this bass includes buckle rash on the back at the upper bout, scuffing on top along the pick path, and several small dings on the body as a whole, primarily concentrated at the lower bout on all sides. The neck profile retains its smooth matching gloss, also exhibiting checking (particularly prominent towards the nut and at the heel), with palm wear through the finish along the shoulders and central to the carve behind fret 5. There are a handful of tiny marks along the profile length, none of which are distracting to the palm while fretting.
A gigbag is included.
