Out Of Stock
Up for sale, a 1966 Martin D-18 dreadnought acoustic guitar in excellent condition. This Martin has received all the maintenance due its vintage including a carved bone nut and saddle, a professional neck reset, and full refret with vintage-spec fretwire. An absolute cannon in terms of projection, this guitar has the most percussive chop and treble detail we’ve ever encountered on a ‘60s D-18. The plain strings are particularly sparkling and clear with a dynamic snap and a distinctive airiness not always attributed to a mahogany back/sides dreadnought. Wound strings are taut and clear with plenty of kick and a high volume ceiling. Low notes stay clear and defined when digging in hard with a flatpick, and this particular example lends itself better to fingerpicking than most. This Martin weighs 4lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in with 12-53 strings, comfortable action, and optimal intonation.

The mahogany neck has a soft V profile carve with considerable depth and fullness, rounding out almost to a conventional C in the higher registers with generous shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .865" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a very dark cut of this particular tonewood, professionally refretted with flawless slender vintage-spec fretwire. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers and notes ring out and sustain beautifully. The guitar features Martin's standard 25.4" dreadnought scale length, with an upgraded 1 11/16" wide hand-carved bone nut. The headstock features a Brazilian rosewood veneer on the face, with a clean Martin logo and original set of pat. pending Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with bright chrome plating.

The genuine Brazilian rosewood bridge is a replacement furnished by Martin, sitting flush with the top on all edges, fitted with a carved and compensated bone saddle and retaining its original small maple bridge plate. The saddle has good height given a fresh neck reset, ensuring optimal playability for decades to come. The original tortoise pickguard is a vibrant, deep red, and this guitar is a transitional model, pairing the tortoise guard with black Boltaron body binding. A strap button has been added to the treble side of the neck heel.

The Natural finish is original, exhibiting broad lacquer checking across the ambered top and fainter checking on the back and sides. The guitar exhibits the usual very slight and short "B string crack" between the pickguard edge and bridge, and an additional similarly slight split at the treble-side waist on top, both of which have been professionally addressed. There are some small scattered nicks consistent with light, careful use on the body as a whole, and light guitar stand wear on the lacquer on the back lower bout edge.

A '70s blue/gray molded Martin hardshell case is included. The case retains its original functional latches and handle, with the Martin badge intact on the outer case lid. There is some discoloration of the plastic at the headstock end on the lid from where a previous band name was removed.
