Up for sale, a 1966 Hagstrom III in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original form-fit chipboard case. Built in Sweden, the Hagstrom III (known as the F-300 in the United States) boasts three single coil pickups with a bevy of tone switches and pickup combinations. Channeling both Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson SG given its triple pickup configuration, six-on-a-side headstock and beveled, double cutaway solid mahogany body, this Hagstrom III manages to be its own unique entity. With a single Master Volume knob and six pickup On/Off and Tone switches, a myriad of sonic options are possible, from squawky Strat-like in-between tones, to snappy bridge pickup sounds, to rich neck pickup tones that have a full, warm low end. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings and low action, this guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 12oz
The maple neck has a slender C shape with round, inviting shoulders and rolled fretboard edges, measuring .770" deep at the 1st fret and .800" at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted with flawless 6105 fretwire which has the same slender width as vintage wire yet with appreciably more height and crown. The guitar plays easily up the 24 3/4" scale, and the neck is straight with a responsive truss rod. The original nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock sports the original sealed back nickel tuners which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should, and the original "Hagstrom III" waterslide decal is intact on the headstock face and surprisingly complete.
All of the electronics function as intended, with dedicated On/Off and Tone switches for each single coil pickup as well as a Master Volume knob. The vibrato is a Hagstrom original, which has a fairly tight feel similar to a Strat, responding well to quick surfy shimmies and deeper dives with ease and complete with the original arm. The stock bridge is intact as well, and also a unique piece of hardware manufactured in-house at Hagstrom. There is light patina on the vibrato unit base and pickup bezels, with cleaner plating on the bridge and vibrato string anchor. The plastic parts are all stock too, with some requisite pick scuffing across the three-ply pickguard.
The body is one piece of solid mahogany with beveled edges, finished in the original bold three-tone Sunburst gloss with the factory hot pink primer coat (an unusual choice, but rather common for a base coat on Hagstrom instruments). The primer coat is peeking through the Sunburst on various small finish chips and spots of wear on the body parameter, and cosmetic wear includes small nicks across the body and light buckle rash central to the back. The neck profile retains its original smooth ambered gloss finish, showing just a couple minor marks on the profile length.
The original form-fit black chipboard case is included.
