Up for sale, a 1966 Gibson SG Special in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. Sporting a Pelham Blue nitro lacquer refinish and light relic applied by Riggio Custom Guitars, this SG Special delivers the inherent warmth and smooth growl of mahogany as a tonewood, with a clear, authoritative acoustic voice that translates well through the stock pair of P-90 pickups. Growly and biting on the bridge pickup and round and smooth at the neck, this SG sustains beautifully with a dynamic, glassy quality that lends itself to ripping drive and sparkling cleans. Featherweight at just 6lbs, this SG Special has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation. The mahogany neck has a fast-feeling medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut, gaining more heft and shoulder further up the fretboard, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .970” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard retains the stock medium jumbo fretwire which has Gibson’s wide/flat fret dress of the era, ostensibly leveled and crowned lightly in the guitar’s lifetime, only exhibiting light wear on the crowns of frets 1-3 and fainter wear beneath the plain strings until fret 6. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the stock nut measures 1 9/16” in width. Two small pieces of fretboard binding have been added to either side of the nut to account for shrinkage. The headstock sports a set of recently installed (and era-correct) vintage Kluson Deluxe double-line strip tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should, with original white buttons. The electronics function as intended; the harness features two original CTS pots, dating to ‘66, with two replacement modern CTS pots. Both original P-90 pickups meter at 8.95k ohms. Before the current finish was applied, the body was routed for a central P-90. Plastics include the original four-ply “batwing” pickguard and a quartet of replacement aged reflector cap knobs. The compensated “lightning bolt” wraparound bridge is a modern replacement, intonated for a plain G string. The gloss Pelham Blue nitro lacquer finish was expertly applied by Riggio Custom Guitars, surgically faithful to vintage spec in terms of saturation and hue, including subtle greening of the clear coat. The finish has been lightly aged by Riggio, exhibiting extensive horizontal lacquer checking and some simulated marks of wear, primarily concentrated along the perimeter and on the back. The smooth matching gloss finish on the neck profile has very faint horizontal checking and simulated palm wear.A modern molded hardshell case is included.
