Up for sale, a 1966 Gibson EB-2D vintage semi-hollowbody bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. The EB-2D is one of Gibson's most desirable, versatile, and eye-catching vintage bass designs, with the body shape and maple construction of Gibson's thinline ES models, yielding a deep, resonant natural acoustic tone.
The EB-2D features a mini humbucker in the bridge position and a "Mudbucker" at the neck, strung with D'addario Chromes 45-100 flatwound strings on the 30 1/2" scale. Everything from pillowy low end woof to more defined midrange heft is available at the flip of a switch, with a particularly balanced and broad sound when both pickups are engaged. The flatwound strings also deliver ample thump, and the additional tone shift/boost push-button control adds further versatility to the EB-2's sound. The bass weighs 9lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a deep U-shaped profile carve with round shoulders and rolled fretboard edges, measuring .910" deep at the 1st fret and 1.010" at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard sports pearl dot inlay and original jumbo fretwire which has plenty of meat and shows virtually no wear. The bass plays cleanly up the 30 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 1/2" in width. On the headstock, the Gibson logo and "crown" are inlaid in pearloid, and the stock tuning machines function as intended with clean nickel plating.
All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup, coupled to a three-way pickup selector switch and tone shift/boost push-button control. The bridge pickup also retains its clean patent sticker on the humbucker baseplate. The bridge has good height on both inserts, leaving plenty of clearance for the mute to engage, and the neck set is ideal. The chrome plating on the hardware is bright and clean, including the original bridge pickup cover, and plastics comprise the wide bevel four-ply pickguard and quartet of reflector cap knobs. The serialized orange Kalamazoo label is visible through the F hole.
The nitro lacquer Cherry finish is dark and rich, 100% original with no touchup or overspray. There are a couple small dings and scuffs on the lower bout on top, and light lacquer checking on the body horns. The bass exhibits buckle rash central to the back, and a few additional nicks and scuffs on the body as a whole. The finish on the neck profile is notably clean and smooth, free of palm wear.
A modern Epiphone-branded black tolex hardshell case is included.
