1966 Fender Mustang Bass Vintage Short Scale Bass Dakota Red w/ Case

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Mustang Bass in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. This genuine vintage Mustang Bass has a smooth, broad natural acoustic response, and plugged in, the instrument offers a complex low midrange character and articulate growl. Strung with roundwound 45-100 strings on the 30" scale, the bass sits well in a mix with ample punch and roundness, approximating the thump of a P Bass with the Tone knob rolled back to taste. The bass is very lightweight at only 7lbs 4oz, professionally setup with low action and accurate intonation here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar.

The maple neck has a round medium C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and rolled fretboard edges, measuring .840" deep at the 1st fret and .880" at the 10th. The rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted with flawless 6105 fretwire that retains the slender width of the vintage fretwire with appreciably more height and crown for easy playability and long fret life. The neck is straight and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, playing cleanly up the 30" scale. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. On the headstock, the bass features the original Fender-stamped "lollipop" tuners along with the Mustang Bass decal which is largely intact with some streaking of the text. The stamp on the neck heel is present and bold, dating to November of '66, along with the factory "paint stick" markings in the neck pocket.

The electronics include the original gray bobbin split coil pickup, untouched solder joints and CTS pots that date to the 31st week of 1966. The chrome-plated hardware has ample shine, and the bridge includes the original springy metal "fingers" and stock mute foam. Original plastic parts include the knobs, pickup cover, finger rest, and white pearloid pickguard. There are two extra thumb rest mounting holes which have been very cleanly filled on the bass-side of the pickguard.

The gloss Dakota Red nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting heavy finish checking running both horizontally and vertically. The finish has some very light speckling on the body horns and perimeter of the slab body, with a small area of light buckle rash on the back of the bass-side body horn, and a few additional finish scuffs and minor dings on the body as a whole. There is a targeted area of pick wear through the finish on the bass side of the pick path, and two small mounting holes adjacent to the bridge (ostensibly for a non-factory bridge cover). There is light birdseye figuring on the maple neck, and the gloss finish on the profile is smooth, with one small area of palm wear through the gloss on the treble side of the carve at the 1st fret.

A brand new Fender G&G black tolex case is included.
