Up for sale, a 1965 Gibson SG Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original chipboard case. Featherweight at 6lbs 9oz, this SG is incredibly snappy and clear acoustically, ringing out with a bark and authority that only comes from a guitar that's been consistently and lovingly played for decades. The stock P-90s absolutely roar and can deliver everything from glassy, articulate cleans to growling, harmonic-rich overdrive with ease. Few instruments are as dynamic and simply soulful as this SG Special, dialed in to play its best here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with optimal action and fresh 10-46 strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a medium C profile carve with round shoulders and more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .835" deep at the 1st fret and .999" at the 12th. On the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the original medium jumbo frets are intact, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5 and playing cleanly in every register. The neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The original nylon nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The headstock retains the original Kluson Deluxe double line tuning machines with stock white buttons, and the truss rod cover is a vintage-spec reissue part. There is light clear nitro lacquer overspray only on the headstock face, and horizontal finish checking on the face as well. The electronics include a complete original harness with CTS pots that date to the 26th week of '65, and both pickups retain their original windings. The plastic parts include the original pickup covers, switch surround, pickguard, and quartet of black reflector cap knobs with clean silkscreen text intact on the caps. The guitar was at one time fitted with an ABR-1 bridge, with two tiny doweled holes and a dot of touchup just forward of the wraparound studs, and the bridge has now been reverted to a vintage Gibson wraparound with "lightning bolt" compensated saddle. The bridge works well with the original chrome-plated Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, which has a smooth, responsive feel and original arm. The vibrato had also been slightly repositioned in the past (currently in its correct spot), resulting in a trio of extra mounting holes just forward of the correct Vibrola positioning. The original nitro lacquer Chery gloss finish is bold and glossy, exhibiting some small scattered nicks on the top and body parameter, with tight horizontal lacquer checking across the body. There is one spot of targeted buckle rash at the treble-side waist, while the neck retains its smooth gloss along the profile length, free of palm wear with just a few shallow nicks. The original Gibson chipboard black tolex case with red plush interior is included, retaining the original Gibson badge on the case pocket, as well as the stock latches and handle.
