Up for sale a 1965 Gibson SG Junior in excellent condition with the original Polaris White custom color finish, 100% original save for a professional refret. Clean and crack-free, this SG features nickel hardware and untouched electronics, notable for being one of the last wide nut (1 11/16") SGs of the '60s.
Tonally, this is an extremely clear and powerful sounding instrument, with an acoustic voice that has surprising projection and top end snap which translates very well through the original dog-ear P-90 pickup. The growl, harmonic content, and sweet, singing quality of a great P-90 is an instantly recognizable tone, and this guitar delivers this iconic sound with ease. The solid mahogany body adds a certain richness to the sound, and through your favorite tube amp you'll find the guitar to be extremely dynamic and responsive to subtle shifts in your playing style. Featherweight at 6lbs, we've had this Junior professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, dialed in with low action and fresh 10-46 strings.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C carve at the nut yet with just enough shoulder and substance, gaining significantly more heft and roundness as you travel up the Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The profile measures .815" deep at the 1st fret and fills out to .985" at the 12th. The guitar has been professionally refretted with medium jumbo fretwire, matching the width of the original frets with slightly more height and crown, currently showing just a hint of wear on the crowns of frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, with a straight neck and optimally adjusted, responsive truss rod. The original nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, and a couple additional string slots have been flawlessly filled (presumably for a different spacing). On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe double line strip tuners are intact, turn smoothly, and hold pitch well.
The stock P-90 pickup is intact, and the wiring harness features untouched solder joints and CTS pots which date to the 14th week of '65. The original compensated bridge is accounted for too, viable as currently strung with the short frame Maestro Vibrola for expressive warbles and dives, and also usable as a wraparound. This bridge design helps this SG deliver a tone that has incredible zing and top end without being harsh or brittle, and the nickel plating on the bridge and Vibrola is in excellent shape. Plastics include the original P-90 cover which exhibits some string wear on the cover edges, the original pickguard, and the stock reflector cap knobs.
The original nitro lacquer custom color Polaris White finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting a few isolated spots of lacquer checking, a few small finish chips on the back headstock edge and lower bout body edge, with only a few additional ancillary chips and minor marks on the instrument as a whole.
A vintage black tolex Gibson hardshell case with red plush interior and clean silkscreen on the exterior is included.
