Up for sale, a 1965 Gibson ES-335 TDC in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. 100% original save for a modern carved bone nut, this ES-335 TDC is authoritative and clear-sounding when strummed acoustically, and the articulate natural response of the instrument is channeled through the original Patent # humbuckers.
These pickups preceded Gibson's T Tops, and the Patent # humbuckers were made with the same materials and wound in the same range as their PAF predecessors. Firmly in the "low-wind" camp, these pickups meter at 7.3k ohms, yielding plenty of dynamic range, chiming trebles and well-defined midrange. The bridge pickup has great clarity highlighting the treble snap of maple as a tonewood, while the broad, airy sound of the neck pickup is further thickened by the warmth and smooth attack of the semi-hollow construction. The guitar weighs 8lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, spot-on intonation, and low action.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with a gentle yet notable increase in overall depth further up the carve, offering additional shoulder and chunk. The profile measures .830" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard boasts small block inlay, and the original medium jumbo fretwire has good meat, exhibiting light uniform wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-5, extending more faintly beneath the plain strings until fret 9. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, carved from bone, and the headstock is fitted with the original set of double line double ring Kluson Deluxe tuning machines.
All of the electronics work as they should, and both humbuckers have untouched solder on the covers and original patent stickers on the baseplates. Hardware includes the chrome pickup covers with bright plating, ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge with correct foundry stamp, and a nickel-plated trapeze tailpiece (representing the shift mid-1965 from nickel to chrome-plated hardware). All plastic parts are extremely tidy as well, including the wide bevel pickguard and quartet of black reflector cap knobs. The orange oval Gibson Kalamazoo, MI label is also intact inside the body.
Cosmetically, this guitar is a real stunner, and the gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray. Dark and rich in its presentation, the finish exhibits subtle vertical lacquer checking, with only light buckle wear central to the back, a couple spots of light chipping beneath the tailpiece string anchor, and a few additional minor marks consistent with careful use. The smooth nitro gloss is intact on the profile length, with light palm wear through the gloss central to the carve behind frets 3-7.
The original hardshell case is included with a smooth black exterior, gold interior, functional original latches, and the stock handle.
