Up for sale, a 1964 Rickenbacker 345S Rose Morris 1998 export model in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. With its distinctive F hole only offered on models exported by Rickenbacker to their UK distributor Rose Morris, the 1998 model seen here is a genuine vintage example, matching the exact year and specifications as the Rickenbacker used by Pete Townshend in the early years of The Who. Retaining original hardware, plastics and electronics, this Ric has been refinished in custom color Desert Gold.
Offering sparkling cleans, cutting chime and rich overdriven cut, the trio of original alnico magnet Toaster Top single coil pickups yield a bevy of traditional Ric tonalities. The semi-hollow maple body ensures both the sonic immediacy of this tonewood and the breadth and warmth of the semi-hollow construction. Weighing 7lbs 9oz, this guitar is easy on the back, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The three-piece maple/walnut neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and rolled edges on the thick slab rosewood fretboard, measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .850" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has dot inlay, refretted with medium jumbo fretwire that has been leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime with good meat remaining and currently showing no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and on the headstock, the original lucite Ric truss rod cover/logo is intact along with modern genuine Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines which work smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics function as intended, and everything is exactly how it was when the guitar left the Rickenbacker factory with blue molded Ajax tone capacitors and CTS pots which date to the 38th week of '64. The chrome-plated hardware is positively gleaming in its presentation, including the Ac'cent Vibrato and trio of Toaster Top pickup covers, while the bridge shows light patina on the roller saddles. All plastics are original and notably clean including the pointer knobs and dual-tiered pickguard. The mono jack plate has a DJ-prefix serial number, dating to October, 1964.
The gloss Desert Gold finish matches one of Rickenbacker's elusive "Color of the Year" finishes, recently refinished by Marty Bell. The finish exhibits no wear on the body, and the gloss on the neck profile is similarly pristine.
The original silver tolex hardshell case with black leather ends is included.
