Out Of Stock
Up for sale, a 1964 Martin D-18 dreadnought acoustic guitar in exceptional, crack-free condition, complete with the original hardshell case. Among the last Martins produced at the North Street factory before Martin shifted to new facilities in June/July, 1964, this D-18 has a bevy of desirable features, most notably hot hide glue construction throughout, with a small maple bridge plate, tortoise binding and pickguard, and a rounded peghead.

This Martin has received all the maintenance due an acoustic of this vintage including a carved bone nut and saddle and a professional neck reset. Tonewoods include a solid X-braced spruce top and mahogany back and sides, with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, offering a traditional Martin dreadnought tonal profile.

This D-18 positively sings with incredible projection and power, yielding an open, ringing quality indicative of a top that’s been seasoned for decades. The guitar has excellent string-to-string clarity and an overarching warmth, and the trebles are woody and percussive, with a gutsy, punchy bass register. The tonal response is very even as you travel up the fingerboard, and this Martin is featherweight at 3lbs 15oz. We've had this D-18 professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12-53 strings, easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The mahogany neck has a medium depth soft V-shaped profile carve at the nut, with additional heft in the higher registers, measuring .820" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original slender fretwire, lightly leveled and crowned, with only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-6. The guitar plays cleanly up the 25.4" scale length with a straight neck, and a modern 1 11/16" wide hand-carved bone nut ensures ideal note clarity and sustain. The headstock features a Brazilian rosewood veneer on the face, with a gold Martin logo and original set of Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch as intended with extremely clean nickel plating.

The Brazilian rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, fitted with a tall carved bone saddle and retaining the original small maple bridge plate. The saddle has ample height given a fresh neck reset, ensuring optimal playability for decades to come. The original tortoise pickguard is a vibrant, deep red, sitting flush with the top on all edges and not necessitating any reseating/relaxing (there is no "B string" crack).

The original gloss nitro lacquer finish is stunning in its presentation, with sparingly little lacquer checking on the body and some requisite pick wear lightly extending beyond the guard on the treble side. Crack-free, cosmetic wear is limited to some light finish scratches and small nicks on the body as a whole, largely on the back. The smooth, satin-esque finish on neck profile exhibits just a few minor marks on the profile length.

A modern black tolex Martin/TKL hardshell case is included.
