Up for sale, a 1964 Gibson J-45 in excellent condition with a Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer finish and the original hardshell case. A stunning example of Gibson's J-45 "ADJ," this guitar boasts an upgraded carved rosewood bridge and traditional drop-in saddle, a notable sonic improvement on the maligned plastic bridges often seen on this model.
An absolute powerhouse, this dreadnought has projection and power to spare. The overarching sound has excellent definition, with a muscly, rich bass register that offers plenty of punch. The midrange has a woody, percussive cut, and the trebles are sparkling and sweet. The breadth and liveliness of this particular J-45 is truly impressive. The guitar weighs 4lbs 5oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 12-53 phosphor bronze strings, offering comfortable action and effortless playability.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .790" deep at the 1st fret and .930" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a notably dark cut of this tonewood, refretted with flawless vintage-spec medium jumbo fretwire that has plenty of meat and crown. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the straight neck with a responsive, ideally adjusted truss rod. The original nylon nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the guitar features original Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners with white buttons and light patina across the nickel plating.
All of the original braces are intact and stable, and the upgraded rosewood bridge has the correct footprint and belly-up shape, sitting perfectly flush with the top and fitted with a drop-in tall compensated saddle. The original dark large tortoise pickguard also sits notably flat, considerably thinner than later "syrupy" Gibson guards, allowing the top to have a more dynamic, responsive sound.
The original Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer finish exhibits prominent lacquer checking, and there are a couple very slight, repaired splits at the waist on both sides of the top. There is also some inconvenient-looking grain in the spruce on the treble side of the top behind the bridge that visually reads like a crack repair, but is nothing of the sort (no crack and no funny business!). Cosmetic wear includes some requisite pick wear on the treble side of the soundhole, a couple spots of very light buckle rash on the upper bout on the back, and some additional light finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. There is also an area of faint wear where a guitar strap very lightly reacted with the clear coat central to the lower bout on the back. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro gloss finish, free of palm wear.
The original black tolex hardshell case with gold plush interior is included. The case features the original functional latches and handle, along with the small metal Gibson badge.
