Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Vibrolux Reverb in excellent condition, freshly serviced and loaded with the original pair of Oxford 10L5 speakers. A rare first-year example of the Vibrolux Reverb, this true Pre-CBS Fender amp is extremely well-kept and well-suited for both stage and studio applications.
With good reason, the Vibrolux is one of the most desirable Fender Black Panel models for its ideal size and power, delivering sparkling cut and muscle and a surprising amount of headroom. Offering 35 tube watts through the original Oxford 10L5 speaker pair, the Vibrolux is the perfect platform for getting the most out of a variety of guitars and stompboxes. Clean and sweet up til about 5 on the volume knob (with a perceived volume that's loud enough to keep up with an aggressive drummer), the Vibrolux has clear note attack and sweet tube rectifier sag, not to mention lush tube-driven Reverb and percussive Tremolo.
The preamp retains its full complement of original blue molded Ajax caps, a key ingredient in the sweet, musical character of Fender's Black Panel circuits. All of the transformers are original, dating between the 34th and 45th weeks of 1964, manufactured by Fender's primary transformer supplier in this era, Schumacher. All of the original Stackpole and CTS pots are intact too, with visible date codes from the 38th week of '64. The power supply has been professionally recapped with Sprague Atoms, and the smaller electrolytics (including the bias cap) have also been upgraded. The preamp has been fitted with a number of low noise metal film resistors, and a three-prong power cable has also been installed.
The tube set includes a matched pair of Sovtek 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes, an Amperex Bugle Boy 5AR4 rectifier, and an assortment of modern and vintage preamp tubes. The Fender-labeled Oxford 10L5 10" speakers are the original matched pair with black frames and foil stickers on the ceramic magnets (one foil sticker is modern), dating to the 42nd week of '64. The tube chart is intact and clean, with a "NL" date stamp which translates to December of 1964.
The original smooth black tolex is intact and extremely clean, and the original baffle has been regrilled with lightly aged silver sparkle grillcloth. The original hardware includes the full complement of witch hat knobs, the raised Fender logo, handle caps, chassis straps, corners, and sphinx glides (feet).
A circa 1970s two-button footswitch is included.
