Up for sale, a 1963 Silvertone Stratotone model 1420 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a chipboard case. Crafted by Harmony in the USA, this unique version of the H46 Stratotone Mars was made exclusively for the Sears company under their house brand "Silvertone." A fully hollow Silvertone model, the Mars has the same body and neck as the H49 Stratotone Jupiter, yet the Mars boasts a pair of "Hershey Bar" pickups (like the highly sought after Harmony H44 model).
The single DeArmond "Hershey Bar" pickup delivers a tone that is very responsive to picking dynamics, offering a rich sound that has both low end heft and treble snap. The overarching sound has a clear note attack and sweet, percussive character, with a touch more focused honk at the bridge and broader, full tones at the neck. This Stratotone is featherweight at 4lbs 11oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and optimal intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Substantial U, “baseball bat” heft, measuring .930” 1st fret, 1.055” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Dyed maple, dot inlay, light finger wear into the maple behind frets 1-3
-Frets: Slender, very light wear beneath the plain strings on 1-2
-Scale Length: 24 1/4”
-Nut: 1 3/4”, bone
-Tuners: Open-gear, white button
Body Specs:
-Wood: Maple (hollow)
-Pickups: DeArmond “Hershey Bar” x2
-Harness: CTS pots date to 33rd week 1963
-Controls: Volume x2, Tone x2, Three-way pickup selector
-Hardware: Rosewood bridge, chrome-plated trapeze tailpiece
-Plastics: Black cupcake knobs, one-ply pickguard (repaired split between Tone knobs)
The gloss Black nitro lacquer finish exhibits light buckle rash on the back, a few small finish scratches at the bass-side lower bout on top, and some minor finish chips on the body edges. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss.
The original chipboard case is included.
