Up for sale, a 1963 Martin D-18 dreadnought acoustic guitar in excellent condition. This Martin has received all the maintenance due its vintage including a carved bone nut and saddle and a professional neck reset.
The guitar has an absolutely massive and detailed sound indicative of an instrument that’s been consistently and lovingly played for decades, boasting a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. The tone is percussive, woody, and sparkling and strings have equal presence, ringing out with Martin’s piano-like clarity, equally responsive as you travel up the fingerboard. Wound strings are focused and taut with a smooth growl when you dig in hard with a flatpick, while the midrange is sweet and layered, and the trebles have a bit of punch and enough brilliance to hold their own. This Martin weighs 4lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in with 12-53 strings, low action, and optimal intonation.
The mahogany neck has a soft V profile carve, medium depth at the nut with significant heft as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .835" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 9th. There are just a few tiny marks central to the V and behind the 1st position on the profile carve which retains its smooth nitro gloss finish and is free of palm wear. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this particular tonewood, retaining the original slender frets which show moderate grooves beneath the B and High E strings on frets 1-3, growing fainter until fret 6 with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers and notes ring out and sustain beautifully. The guitar features Martin's standard 25.4" dreadnought scale length, with an upgraded 1 11/16" wide hand-carved bone nut. The headstock features a Brazilian rosewood veneer on the face, with a clean Martin logo and a set of aged reissue Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
The Brazilian rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, retaining its original small maple bridge plate, fitted with a tall carved bone saddle and featuring solid rosewood bridge pins. The saddle has good height given a fresh neck reset, ensuring optimal playability for decades to come. The original tortoise pickguard is a vibrant, deep red, sitting very flat with no B string crack. The Natural finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, framed by tortoise binding on the top and back. There is strum wear across the soundhole and fretboard extension, extending beyond the pickguard on the treble side, with a few professionally addressed crack repairs on the treble-side lower bout edge on top, and two additional very faint and tight repaired splits on the treble side of the body in the mahogany. Wear is otherwise limited to light targeted buckle rash on the treble-side upper bout on the back, and various nicks and finish scratches consistent with honest use on the body as a whole.
A vintage black tolex hardshell case is included.
